1. What inspired you to go into event planning/design?

My whole life, people always told me that I over-analyzed, spent too much time worrying about details and was too organized for my own good.  For me, being an event designer is more than putting together a timeline, making sure all the candles are lit and having a back-up Best Man speech.  It’s taking the ideas you have for the most important moment of your life and making it all reality.  When you wake up the morning of your wedding, I want all of your thoughts to be about you and how excited you are to marry your best friend.  Let me worry about when the flowers are arriving and making sure the bridesmaids dresses are steamed.

So why weddings?  Well, it’s selfish really.  Not too long ago I was waking up on my own wedding day and loving every single second of it.  When I’m designing a wedding, I get to re-live all the things I cherish on the 1st day of married life.  I love creating the moments that are going to be forever engrained in your heart.  The first time seeing each other.  The walk down the aisle.  The first dance.  The cake cutting (or smashing!).  It’s moments like this that you’ll never forget and I am always honored by the couples that let me help create them.

2. What is your favorite aspect of planning/designing a wedding?

Walking into a space that I’ve created, at plain sight, may look like just a beautifully decorated room.  My favorite part though, is throughout the event having guests find the subtle details that make for a huge impact.  The beautiful details that WOW! the guests.  The beautiful details that they will be talking about long after the event is over.  The details that tell the couple’s story.  The details that make the difference.

3. What do you do to understand a couple’s vision and bring it to life?

The first thing I ask for is their story: their most fun moments together, what makes them laugh, what is important to them as individuals and as a couple.  I ask why they decided to get married, what family members have made an impact on them and so on.  In order for me to bring to life the vision that’s been created on a Pinterest board of photos (since before they were even dating), I like to know why the couple chose a certain venue, time of year, specific flower.  For me, telling their love story is always the design inspiration.

4. What advice do you have for couples in the initial stages of wedding planning?

Don’t be afraid to say, “No.” When you’re planning a wedding, pressure comes from everywhere.  At the end of the day, the couples that I find to enjoy themselves the most are the ones who are able to make the day entirely about them without too seriously considering the opinions of family, friends, co-workers….the dog-sitter.  It’s okay to say, “No,” especially if you’re footing the bill.  Make the day what you want it to be.

5. What’s the number one reason you recommend hiring a wedding planner?

Most of the couples I work with come to me after they’ve started their planning process.  They realize at some point, that the vision that they have in their minds, is actually not easy to bring to reality without planning a wedding being their full time job.  Anyone can hire a florist.  Anyone can buy favors.  Anyone can print menus off of Etsy.  An event designer creates a space that tells a story.  An event designer takes the worries of “will they put this in the spot I want it?” away.  An event designer is able to create a reality from your vision (within a budget!).  When you’re buying here and there on your own, the budget tends to get out of control.  When you give an event designer a budget, they will stick to it.

We had such a great time working with Kaitlin Agulto Weddings on the ‘For the Love of Copper’ styled shoot, which was featured on Burnett’s Boards! Check out the film below.
